Repair - v-wreck - Sub Static 06

When Canada meet Germany... Even if it could surprise you when listening to this 6th Sub Static, Repair is a duo based in Toronto. It's made of Mark & Matt Thibideau, two brothers who have done before solo projects under the names of "Crave" and "Altitude" (on Blue Records, Chair or Woodwork labels). They collaborate for the first time on the German label and bring three brilliant tracks where groove, minimalism and pumpin' rhythm are mixed with brio. The two guys should keep on working together : we hope so !!

Magnus Hjelte - Take a Bow - Institution 6 01

After his appearance on GFR1204, Magnus proves his skills on newly started US label Institution 6. A1 track is simply amazing. Beautiful hypnotising Detroit sound over a kicking groove. Strong rhythm and some freaky laughing vocals on A2 are surely making us pay attention. A great DJ tool. B side continues the story - futuristic sound on both B tracks. The first one is similar to A1, with some fully driving groovy Detroit chords. B2 - sterile at first, but still as deep & effective as the previous ones. We'll take a bow to this record. It really deserves it.

John Starlight - The visitor - Lasergun 12

With this new pseudo, Florian Senfter aka Splank! of Zombie Nation brings four original tracks. Techno 80's first with the excellent "Holy" including a beautiful vocoderized voice. Techno again but maybe in a more experimental way with the noisy "Blast from the past", where there are both natural rhythm and aggressive sounds. Techno pop then, with the great "Brainsaw", a more quiet track in spite of its strident melody. The vocoderized voice is nice too. At last, "Z-Trainer", produced with Hometrainer, is typically electro : vocoder (again), analog sounds and old computer sounds. Check it !

Umek - Consumer Recreation EP - Primate 57

Named after his well known label, this EP goes back introducing three retro tracks, but with a modern arrangement. A1 reminds of early Robert Hood production with some great piano chords - a follow-up of Umek's remix of 'I feel loved' by Depeche Mode. B1 is very similar to some of his tracks on Spielzeug 07 but with some alterations, and finally,... read more

Unai - Sessions around midnight EP - Sub Static 05

The young label from Cologne welcomes Erik Möller aka Unai on its 5th release. The first side is a deep techno long-player of about 10 minutes. Rhythm and sounds remember some productions of Detroit or by Aril Brikha for instance. Over this come a voice and some strings submerged in a huge reverb. Excellent ! On the B-side, the first title is more in a minimal house style with a lot of short and nice sounds as well as some samples in the background. At last, the last track mixed dub sounds, a massive bass and a melancholic melody. A great EP. Check it !
